Why can’t my child automatically play up an age group?

While we understand that some children may be very capable, junior football rules are designed around player safety, confidence and development. Playing up is not automatic and must be assessed to ensure it’s in the best interests of the child, not just the team.

My child is very skilled — doesn’t that mean they should play up?

Skill is only one factor. We also consider:

  • physical size and strength

  • ability to cope with contact

  • confidence and resilience

  • enjoyment and social connection

A child can be highly skilled but still be better supported playing in their natural age group.

Who decides if a child can play up?

It’s a shared decision involving:

  • the parent/guardian

  • the coach

  • the club (Registrar / Junior Coordinator)

  • the league (if required)

The final decision must align with AFL and league rules and our duty of care.

Can my child play up just for numbers or team needs?

No. Decisions are never made based on filling teams or ladder outcomes. Player welfare always comes first.

Can a decision be reviewed during the season?

Yes. If a child is approved to play up, the arrangement may be reviewed. If there are concerns about safety, confidence or enjoyment, the club may recommend returning to their natural age group.

What if I still have questions or concerns?

We encourage open conversations. Please reach out to your Team Manager, Coach or Registrar, and we’re happy to talk through your child’s individual situation.

Yes. If a child is approved to play up, the arrangement may be reviewed. If there are concerns about safety, confidence or enjoyment, the club may recommend returning to their natural age group.
