Definition of South East Juniors and South East Regional Competitions
South East Juniors
South East Juniors is our local junior football league. The Saints’ younger teams generally compete against other clubs within the South East Juniors competition.
South East Regional Competition
The South East Regional Competition is the broader AFL South East competition for older age groups. It brings together teams from clubs across South East Juniors, Frankston and District Junior Football League and Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League.
STEP 1, EXPLAINED
What the $50 actually does
That's a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer.
-
It holds your child's spot. Waitlisted players are placed into teams first, before general registrations.
-
It's credit, not an extra charge. The $50 comes straight off your 2027 season fees when you register in November.
-
It gets you into pre-season. Waitlisted players train with us from the very first pre-season session — you don't wait until registration opens.
-
It tells us how many teams to field. Numbers decide whether an age group runs. Early deposits are how age groups survive.
-
The deposit/payment is non-refundable. We'd rather say so here than in the fine print. It's held against your season fees and it comes off the total.

Coach or assistant coach in 2027
Every coaching role at this club is advertised and applied for every single year — including roles held by our current coaches. That isn't a lack of faith in the people we have. It's how a club stays open to the people it hasn't met yet.
If you've been thinking about it, apply.
New applicants are actively encouraged, and you do not need to have coached before.
-
We'll get you accredited. The club supports you through your AFL coaching accreditation.
-
You don't need to have played. Some of our best coaches never did. Being good with kids matters more.
-
Assistant coach is a real option. If a head coach role is too much, start beside one.
-
We especially want coaches for our girls' teams. Female coaches and assistant coaches, we would love to hear from you.
-
You'll need Level 1 accreditation for your age group before the season starts, and to be registered in CoachAFL. We'll get you there.
-
Adults need a Working with Children Check. It's free for volunteers and we'll walk you through it. Under 18s are exempt under Victorian law — you don't need one.
-
Minimum age: [CLUB MINIMUM AGE]. Still playing juniors yourself? Assistant coaching is one of the best things you can do with a Saturday, and we'd love to hear from you.

Team officials in 2027
A team can't take the field without them. Like coaching roles, team official positions are reapplied for each year, and new applicants are actively encouraged - most people who do these jobs had never done them before their first season.
Junior footy takes a village. While the above are ciritical team roles, these may also be required, please speak with your team amanger about these roles, once they are appointed.
Most roles are one game a week, and plenty are shared across a few parents so nobody carries the season on their own. Tell us what you can offer and we'll find something that fits around your life, not the other way around.
STILL DECIDING?
Ask us anything
We're a volunteer club and we answer every message. There is no such thing as a silly question about junior footy - AFL might be the national game, but we were all new to junior footy at one point! and this is not the AFL.
***Special notes for U17.5 Boys and U18.5 Girls
U17.5 Boys
U17.5 Boys is the final junior boys age group and allows players to continue playing junior football with teammates of a similar age.
For the 2027 season, a player must be no older than 17 years and 6 months on 1 January 2027. He must be born on or after 1 July 2009.
Can U17.5 players also play U19 football at a senior club?
Yes. Standard-age U17.5 players will generally fall within the national age range for U19 football and may also be permitted to play with an U19 senior-club team.
This is not automatic. If the player is registered with the NSS JFNC and wants to play for another club or competition, the appropriate Game Permit or Season Permit must be arranged through PlayHQ.
A valid interchange agreement must also exist between the junior and senior competitions.
Younger players who are playing up in U17.5 may not yet meet the minimum age for U19 football. Families should speak with the club Registrar before making arrangements with any senior club.
U18.5 Girls
U18.5 Girls is the final girls-only junior age group. It gives eligible players the opportunity to continue playing junior football in a girls-only team before moving fully into senior women’s football.
For the 2027 season, a player must be no older than 18 years and 6 months on 1 January 2027. She must be born on or after 1 July 2008.
Can U18.5 players also play U19 football at a senior club?
Yes. Players who meet the relevant age requirements may also be permitted to play in a suitable U19 competition at a senior club.
Where an U19 women’s competition is not available, they may also be age-eligible for senior women’s football.
Playing for a separate senior club is not automatic.
The appropriate Game Permit or Season Permit must be arranged through PlayHQ, and a valid interchange agreement must exist between the junior and senior competitions.
Families should speak with the club Registrar before registering or arranging matches with a senior club.
***Balancing junior and senior football
SFNL (This is where our affiliated senior league plays) U19 matches are generally played on Friday nights or Saturdays, while junior matches are normally played on Sundays. This can allow eligible players to participate in both competitions.
Players and families must understand that the U17.5 Saints team remains the player’s primary football team. Training, match-day availability, preparation and commitment to the junior team are expected to remain a priority.
Senior football is an additional development opportunity. It should not regularly leave a player unavailable, overly fatigued or unable to give their full effort to their junior teammates.
Health and wellbeing, family, education and employment will always be important priorities. We simply ask players and families to communicate early and honestly when another commitment affects football.
Both coaches, team managers and the clubs (junior & senior) must be kept informed of the player’s schedule and workload, if participating across junior and senior space). If a football commitment clashes (across junior and senior), the junior Saints team takes priority unless another arrangement has been agreed in advance (both junior and senior).
